On the northern coast of Spain, along the Cantabrian Sea and at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, you'll find Getariako Txakolina. A small but mighty appellation, the wines they produce are fresh and airy, seamlessly integrating into the lives and culture of a seaside town. Ever so slightly effervescent, Txakolis are enjoyed alongside pintxos and sidras, precariously poured from above the shoulder or communally out of a porrón.

In the early 19th century, the native varietals of the region (Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza) thrived, and wine production boomed. When Phylloxera arrived in 1853, the vines suffered and red wine production was entirely abandoned. Due to the steep slopes and proximity to the sea, the white grapes grown in Getaria were better able to resist the plague. As time passed, production was nearly non-existent. Finally, experts brought modern trellising systems, allowing the vines to receive better airflow and ripen evenly. Along with a more complete knowledge of the soils and climate, and a large amount of experimentation, Txakoli was once again thriving and Getariako Txakoli officially awarded D.O. status in 1989.

Basa Lore is the second project of Basaurresti and is an entirely women-owned and operated winery founded in 1925. As one of the six founding wineries of the Getariako Txakoli D.O., they have a deep respect and passion for their life's work. Their love for the terroir and tradition of the region is evident in their 'Sarea' bottlings; receiving their name from the ancient Basque word for the fishing nets traditionally sewn and mended by local Basque women. These wines are energizing and carry the characteristic acidity and slight fizz recognized around the world.
