Dirupi is based in the medieval town of Sondrio in Valtellina, the lush and mountainous valley of Lombardia. Winemakers Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco grew up there together, and as is local tradition, helped with harvests each fall. After graduating from the University of Milan with degrees in Enology, they acquired 18 ancient vineyard sites throughout famed subzones such as Grumello and Inferno. Meaning cliff in Italian, Dirupi is an ode to the extreme high-elevation alpine terroir that defines these wines.

When we say high-elevation vineyards, we mean some of the highest in the region. Dirupi’s Nebbiolo vines reach a staggering 650 meters (many vineyards in Barolo for example, are roughly 200 meters less). At this altitude the top soils are sandy gravel, providing excellent drainage, and the vineyards are peppered with large rocks which help to regulate the day to night temperature changes. In these rugged, post ice-age, and at times frankly inhospitable sites, Dirupi has worked with great care to select each plot of vines in order to maximize their potential growth while managing weather conditions.

Each of these terraced plots are lovingly supported by 1000 year old hand-made rock walls, and as often comes with the territory of steep, terraced vineyards, all farming and harvesting is done by hand. As a result of fastidious work and true passion, these are wines of nuance and poise, and shiny jewel-toned fruit.
