Domaine des Nugues is owned by Gérard Gelin and his son Gilles. The estate is located in the Northern Beaujolais, around the crus of Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie and Morgon. The estate takes its name from an exceptional vineyard purchased by Gilles in 1976 called “Clos des Nugues”. The wines from Gelin's 15-hectare vineyard have developed an extraordinary following, and justifiably so.  Gérard retired in 2008, so Gilles along with his wife Magali now run the show.

The vineyards are bordered on either side by Morgon to the west and Fleurie to the east. The vines average forty years in age and the quality of the fruit grown on this hillside site is extraordinary. There are even some vines that have reached an age of over a century. The wines made here are never artificially adjusted and are richer and denser that many Cru Beaujolais.

As keeping with the finest tradition, all fruit is hand-harvested and whole-cluster vinified. Tasting of only the pure fruit flavors of unadulterated Beaujolais, they evolve beautifully with bottle age.

Gelin produces a unique and delicious sparkling Gamay “MADE BY G”, produced according to the ancestral method (i.e. it is bottled partway through fermentation, trapping the residual CO2 in solution).  This style of wine is also referred to as a ‘pétillant naturel’ or pet-nat, since it does not involve extraneous additions of sugar or yeast.
