Ironclad distillery is truly a family affair.  Father, Stephen runs the day-to-day operations, Kara is their communications director and Owen is the head distiller.  Their family founded the distillery in 2012 on the notion of using only the highest quality, locally sourced Virginia ingredients.

The inspiration for the company’s name came from the battle of the Ironclad ships that happened during the Civil War in 1862 in the waters off the Port of Newport News, Virginia. Today the distillery is located along the James River, within view of the old Battle of the Ironclads site. Ironclad operates in the prodigious S.W. Holt & Co. warehouse built in 1913.

The unique flavors of their bourbons come from the aging in their rick house.  Because of the brackish air from Virginia’s James River, the products age slower and evolve differently than other typical bourbon productions.
