Lorenzo Mattoni embodies the authentic essence of Umbrian winemaking tradition, handed down with love and dedication through generations. Lorenzo’s father, Lodovico, was a visionary who had the insight to create a dry Sagrantino, breaking away from the traditional and sweeter Passito method. This bold act opened the doors to a new world of taste and sophistication and awakened a new Umbrian sense of terroir. A founding member of the Confraternita del Sagrantino (Brotherhood of the Sagrantino) and the Chairman of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco (Consortium for the Protection of Montefalco Wines), Lodovico was instrumental in establishing the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOC in 1979 and later helped elevate it to DOCG status in 1992.
Today, Lorenzo is dedicated to his legacy choosing to farm according to "Ethical Viticulture,” a set of sustainable practices respectful of nature, typicity, territory, and tradition, with an eye to the future and a promise to the past. He is devoted to Sagrantino and his 9 hectares of vineyards which yield about 800 cases annually. He rounds out his small portfolio with a bianco made 100% from Trebbiano Spoletino and a red blend made from Sagrantino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
While Lorenzo believes wine is made in the vineyard, the winemaker must be a guide in the cellar with rigorous respect for nature and the territory. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats, using selected indigenous yeasts to best preserve the characteristics of Sagrantino and his other wines. Aging is carefully carried out in tonneaux and large barrels, enhancing the extraordinary longevity, which for Sagrantino can be up to 30 years without losing its magnificence.
Lorenzo’s wines are true oenological treasures and authentic tastes of Umbria, the result of a unique terroir where each vine grows in harmony with the surrounding nature, ensuring superior quality and distinctive personality. Each sip of Lorenzo Mattoni’s wine tells an Umbrian story of tradition, passion, and dedication to quality.
