Bovio Barbera d'Alba Regiaveja 2015

Wine Spectator: 90 pts

Cherry jam, leather and spice flavors highlight this ripe red. Lush, with good underlying cut and sweet spice notes gracing the long finish. Leans toward the muscular side. Drink now through 2021. 600 cases made.

The 2015 'Regiaveja' Barbera d'Alba Superiore is a simply gorgeous showing from Gianfranco Bovio. This Barbera spent 6 months in 500 liter barrels (20% new 80% used), followed by 8 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The result is an intensely dark colored wine that offers beautifully complex aromatics of blackberries and dark cherries woven together with crushed stones, exotic spices, balsamic reduction and a lovely roasted coffee character. On the palate this is medium-bodied and ultra velvety, as it impresses with excellent focus as it leads into the mineral laced finish. This is an absolutely fantastic Barbera that is showing remarkably well right now, yet should also evolve continue to in the cellar over the next few years.
